The success of our scout group is linked to the work of our volunteers.

You can help out in many ways.

We encourage all parents to contribute in some way.  This could be as simple as cooking some sausages at a sausage sizzle or helping out with an activity night or it could be more involved such as being a section leader.

We understand that we all have busy lives - however if every parent at the very least gives a little of their time then the group will function well.

Leader

Are you our next leader: We are always looking for new leaders and assistant leaders.  These are rewarding and fulfilling roles and training is provided.

Whilst all our volunteers are important, we simply wouldn't be able to operate without our Group and Section leaders.

If you want a fulfilling and rewarding role in which you help youth members develop their abilities, whether it is with life skills, self-confidence, etc then the role of leader (or assistant leader) will provide just that.  You will also get to share the fun and adventures that our scouts have.

You do not have to be an expert qualified leader - most scout leaders start out just like you, mums and dads with no scout experience.

ScoutsWA will provide you with accredited leadership training and you will be supported by other leaders in our group.

As a leader you will be entitled to have one of your children attend without paying term fees.

Administrative Support for your scout section

Each scouting section operates more effectively if it has admin support.

This role would involve duties such as taking responsibility for the Sign-in/Sign-Out register, gathering email addresses and contact details for new scouts,  maintaining participation lists for camps, liaising with the section Leader regarding administration tasks needed, etc.

Attendance at monthly Committee meetings is encouraged for the incumbent of this role, but not essential.

Activity

Helper

Most meeting nights would benefit from one or two parent helpers, whether as an extra set of hands, ears or eyes.

Your assistance may be as simple as helping to set up an activity or to assist with the tidy up at the end of the night.  Or it may be more involved where you help to run an activity.

You won't be expected to do anything you are uncomfortable with - however you may find that you will have as much fun as the scouts.

Cub Badge Coordinator

The Cub badge coordinator is asked to attend each week and assess any badges that the Cubs have been working on.

This requires reading the badge requirements in the Cub’s Yellow Badge Book, reviewing the work the Cub has brought in to meet those requirements and signing off the Level 1 badges, or asking the Cub Leader to sign off the Level 2. Once a badge has been achieved, the Cub Badge Coordinator will ensure it is awarded at the Closing Parade each week.

There is some record keeping involved in this role as well, keeping track of which badges each Cub has earned, and when to order more badges from the Scout Shop.

Committee Member

The Parents Committee’s main function is to support the group to ensure that we have an active and healthy group.

To function at a basic level the Committee requires people to fill the roles of:

  • Chairperson

  • Treasurer

However, the Committee (and therefore the group) will be more effective if it can fill as many of the roles listed below:

  • Secretary

  • Fundraising Coordinator

  • Grant Writer

  • Quartermaster

  • Website Manager

The Parents Committee is elected at an Annual General Meeting usually held in March or April of each year. Members are required to attend two meetings per term.

Other Help
& General support

Support your child:  One of the most important things you can do is encourage and support your child in their scouting journey.

Committee Meetings:  Attend a committee meeting.  You don't have to take on a formal role to be able to contribute to our group, but by attending a meeting you can have a say in any proposed changes, offer a new / fresh idea, an opinion, and add to our knowledge base with your own experience and expertise.  You are able to participate in any voting at a meeting you attend.

Communicate:  It is important to communicate changes, concerns, etc leaders, treasurer, etc in a timely manner.  We appreciate early communication of all matters as it assists with planning & preparation.

Fees:  You can help by paying your fees on time or, if you are having difficultly with payment, by contacting the Treasurer regarding this.  This allows our volunteers such as the Treasurer and Group Leader to focus on other issues rather than following up on accounts.

General assistance & awareness:  There are often many little things that just need doing - if you see something that needs doing then offer to help or perhaps just do it.  This could be as simple as picking up some rubbish dropped around the hall, or noticing that at the end of the night that the hall needs a sweep and then grabbing a broom and helping out.

Fundraising:  Help is always needed for fundraisers - you could help by serving at a sausage sizzle, selling a box of chocolates, or perhaps you have business contacts who can help with donations.
